Frederiksborg Castle near Hillerød, Denmark, is a magnificent renaissance castle dating back to 1599, and was originally a manor house accuired in 1560 by King Frederik II. The interior dates from the 1680s and is inspired by the Italian and French baroque style. The castle has been reconstructed after a fire in 1859 and in the Great Hall, the Audience Chamber and the Castle Church, you can experience the splendour which characterized the original castle.

The Collections The Museum of National History holds an outstanding collection of textiles and embroidered table cloths from the 17th century, furniture, porcelain, glass, history painting, tapestries, and decorative art. The museum is also the national portrait gallery of Denmark and covers the period from the late 15th century up to the present.
The Buildings and the Baroque Garden The architecture of Frederiksborg Castle is inspired by the French and Dutch Renaissance styles. The buildings are situated on three islands in the castle lake and nearby is the beautiful Baroque Garden which was laid out in the 1720s. The garden underwent several changes during the following centuries, but was restored in the 1990s, complete with cascades and parterre flower beds. The garden is symmetrical in its design and extends a line from the central axis of the castle far into the landscape.
